Sophomore at Saint Xavier University died in Tinley Park crash, Providence Catholic HS mourns

Mason Santiago Car Accident: A 19-year-old New Lenox man and resident of Chicago, IL passed away in a deadly car accident on Interstate 80 early Sunday morning. 19-year-old Mason Santiago, a sophomore student at Saint Xavier University passed away in the crash that also left a second person dead.

The Providence Catholic High School graduate was an athletic student majoring in Sports Communications at the Chicago-based university. Mason Santiago was a defensive force playing a hybrid linebacker/defensive back position for Providence Catholic HS. At the university, he played the position of a linebacker.

What Happened To Mason Santiago?

Illinois State Police said that two persons were killed in a crash on Interstate 80 in the south suburbs early Sunday morning. According to ISP, the incident occurred on I-80 westbound between La Grange Road and Harlem Avenue in Tinley Park shortly before 4:30 a.m. According to ISP, the incident involved an SUV and a semi. The circumstances behind the crash were not immediately known.

At the site, all westbound lanes were closed, along with the Harlem Avenue ramp. All lanes have now reopened. The ISP did not immediately disclose any information regarding the crash.

In high school, Santiago led Providence to the Class 4A state playoffs while playing both positions. ‘He was always the X element.’ There are other football-related notes. Mason Santiago turned the corner and headed up the field against Joliet Catholic in a Class 4A second-round playoff game at New Lenox on Saturday, November 5, 2022.
